The Lloyd's Market
Lloyd's is not an insurance company. Its members, both
corporate and individual, underwrite in syndicates on
whose behalf professional underwriters accept risk.
Supporting capital is provided by investment institutions,
specialist investors, international insurance companies
and individuals.
Lloyd's brokers bring business to the market. The risks
shown to underwriters originate from clients and other
brokers and intermediaries all over the world. The aggregate
syndicate results, which are prepared on an annual accounting
basis, provide information about the financial performance
of the market as a whole.
Lloyd's is the world's leading specialist insurance
market and has the capacity to write approximately £14.8bn
of business in 2006. It occupies sixth place in terms
of global reinsurance premium income, and is the second
largest surplus lines insurer in the US. In 2006, 62
syndicates are underwriting insurance at Lloyd's, covering
all classes of business from more than 200 countries
and territories worldwide.
